Stay high above Bwindi, a short walk to the trekking center
Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge sits on the ridge above the forest in southern Bwindi, with wide views that pull your attention outward—before the day has properly started. Being close to the briefing point changes the feel of a gorilla trek day: less time on the road at dawn, and an easier return when your legs are done and your mind is full.
Inside, comfort is practical and earned. Fireside warmth in the evening, quiet rooms for deep sleep, and hosting that keeps the details simple—timing, meals, and the small things you notice most after a long day outside. And because the lodge is rooted here, your stay also supports community work through Gorilla Junction Foundation—impact that’s part of your experience in Bwindi. Everything here is shaped around that rhythm—so the morning feels unhurried, and the evening feels like yours again.

Dining & Cuisine
At the heart of Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge is the Rafiki Lounge and Dining Area—high ceilings, timber beams, and wide views over Bwindi and the Virunga Volcanoes. Meals are freshly prepared and home-cooked, using locally sourced ingredients, with freshly baked breads and complimentary tea and coffee always close by.
When the day winds down, the Rafiki Bar and Mylica Lounge are an easy getaway to sit and replay it—fine wines, local beers, cocktails, and spirits, poured without fuss.
Ways to spend the day at Nkuringo
Your gorilla trek is the centre of your stay at Nkuringo. Around it, the region gives you a mix of forest time, walking, birds, water, and community-led encounters—so you can shape the days between gorilla trekking at your own pace.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Bwindi is an ancient rainforest on steep ridges at the edge of the Albertine Rift—one of the last places in Africa where the forest still feels uninterrupted. It's a sanctuary for mountain gorillas, yes, but the surprise is everything around them: layers of ferns and orchids, primates moving through the canopy, elephants roaming the forest floor, and birdlife that draws specialists from across the world. In a compact park, the density of life is extraordinary—trees, ferns, birds, mammals—stacked into a vertical world that reveals itself slowly as you walk. A forest that has endured for millennia, and still asks you to explore it on foot, quietly, with attention. Bwindi has four trekking regions, each with its own character—Nkuringo, where we made our home, is known for steeper, more scenic ridges.
Mist Spa

Wellbeing at Nkuringo is built into the setting. Wide verandas invite slow mornings with tea or wine, birdsong carries through the ridge air, and misty views over the forest do their quiet work while you take your time. Between treks, there’s space for gentle stretching, a robe-and-birdsong start to the day, and meals that lean on fresh, locally sourced ingredients—simple, nourishing, and beautifully suited to the pace of Bwindi.
Tucked into a garden corner, Mist Spa adds focused recovery when you want it: massages, aromatherapy, and locally inspired therapies—restorative after steep forest trails and cool ridge air.
Getting here
Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge is remote in the way Bwindi should be—but it isn’t hard to reach when your safari is planned well. Most guests arrive either by a scenic drive through southwestern Uganda or by a short flight to Kisoro, followed by a 4x4 transfer up to the ridge.
By road, it’s around 8–10 hours from Kampala (about 550 km), then about 1.5 hours from Kisoro town on the mountain road to the lodge. From Kigali, it’s around 5–6 hours (about 170 km), including the border crossing—useful if Rwanda fits your flight plan.
If you prefer to fly, Aerolink operates scheduled flights from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip (about one hour), followed by a pre-arranged 4x4 transfer to the lodge (about 1.5 hours). Driving times vary with road conditions and border crossing formalities.

Community & Conservation
Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge is Ugandan-owned and owner-operated, built to keep value in the place it depends on. Across our sister lodges, 95% of our teams are local hires—people who live beside this forest and build their careers here.
Our positive impact also shows up in how the lodge runs day to day: solar power, nature-positive, low-impact operations, and long-term contributions to the landscape, alongside community investment through Gorilla Junction Foundation—supporting education, skills, enterprise, and environmental programs around Nkuringo through the Robert Brierley community center.
