A calm lake experience that fits naturally into your transfer to Nkuringo
Lake Mutanda Canoeing is a scenic way to reach Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge from Kisoro without spending the whole journey on the road. It works especially well for guests who arrive in Kisoro early in the day and still have time before the next day’s gorilla trek. Instead of driving straight through the mountains to the lodge, you begin in Kisoro town, set off on foot through villages and small farms, and continue down to the lake for a canoe crossing.
There are two simple ways to do it: a short canoe ride across the lake with onward transfer to the lodge, or a longer version with more time on the water before continuing to Nkuringo. On some walking trails, you may stop for coffee along the way or pause for lunch by the lake before the final transfer.
What makes the experience memorable is how the walking guide controls the rhythm. You move gradually from town to hillside paths, from cultivated slopes to open water, with the Virunga volcanoes in view for much of the route. Nkuringo arranges the guide, canoe team, luggage transfer, and timing in advance, so the day stays easy to enjoy.
How the experience unfolds
The day starts in Kisoro town, usually over a cup of locally grown Arabica, where you meet your walking safari guide and leave your bags with the driver. From there, the road noise falls away quickly. The route slips out through the edge of town and into the surrounding hills, past small shops, homesteads, coffee plots, and kitchen gardens bright with beans, cassava, and matoke. You pass by women working the garden slopes with hoes and babies on their backs. Children call out 'Mzungu' (wanderer) as you pass. Above it all, the Virunga volcanoes sit on the skyline, steady and blue in the distance.

The path rises and falls gently through settled country. At first the lake is only a flash between ridges, a strip of silver that disappears as quickly as it came. Then it returns, larger each time, until the track drops toward the shore. On some departures, there is time to pause at a local farm for a garden-to-cup coffee experience before continuing down. By the water, fishermen wait with long wooden canoes pulled up at the edge, and the lake lies wide and quiet beneath the hills. Lifejackets are handed out before you step in.
There are two ways to continue. The shorter option is a direct crossing of about 30 minutes, after which your driver and luggage meet you on the far side for the final transfer to Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge. The longer version stays on the lake for two to three hours, moving past small islands, papyrus-fringed inlets, and shallows where birds gather close to the water. On some days, there is time to stop for lunch at Mutanda Lake Resort before continuing to the lodge.

Planning the canoe

Duration
Allow about 4 to 8 hours, depending on the walking pace, canoe length, and any optional stops along the way.
Distance
The full route usually covers about 10 to 18 kilometres on foot, plus a canoe section that can last from roughly 30 minutes to 3 hours.
Difficulty
This is a moderate outing. The walking follows village paths and rolling slopes, with some uneven ground on the descent to the lake. The short canoe version keeps the day lighter.
Start and finish
The experience begins in Kisoro town, continues through the Lake Mutanda area, and ends with your transfer to Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge.

Essentials

Support on the day
You are accompanied by a local walking guide and canoe team. Lifejackets are provided for the lake crossing. Your luggage goes ahead by vehicle, and support can be arranged for guests who would rather skip part of the walk.

How to book it
Lake Mutanda Canoeing is best arranged in advance as part of your stay at Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge. It works especially well on a Kisoro arrival day, when there is still time to turn the transfer into part of the experience before the next day’s trek. The team can help you choose the short or longer version based on your arrival time and pace.

Best time to go
Bwindi is open year-round. Drier months (Jun, Jul, Aug, Sept, & Dec) usually mean easier walking and less mud underfoot. Wetter months (Mar, Apr, May, Oct, & Nov) can mean heavier trails and more rain, so it helps to arrive prepared for changing conditions.
Book early if gorilla trekking or habituation is one of the main reasons for your time in Bwindi. Once your permit is secured, it becomes much easier to shape the rest of your Uganda safari and accommodation around it.
