Getting to Nkuringo
Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge sits on Nteko Ridge in southern Bwindi, close to the gorilla trekking routes that bring many guests to this part of Uganda. There are three practical ways to reach the lodge. You can fly into Kisoro and continue by road, drive through Uganda as part of a longer safari, or travel from Kigali, Rwanda. The right choice depends on your travel time and comfort.
Your main ways to get here
Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge is in southern Bwindi, on Nteko Ridge, above the forested slopes of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This is highland country, with terraced hills, cooler air, forest edges, and views that open toward the Virunga volcanoes when the weather is clear.
The lodge is especially well placed for guests trekking from the Nkuringo sector. Rushaga can also be reached by road when your permit is issued for that sector. Your permit sector should match your lodge location, so settle this before you confirm the stay.

For short Bwindi safaris, flying to Kisoro keeps the arrival simpler and removes the full-day road transfer from central Uganda. For longer Uganda safaris, travelling by road can make better sense because Bwindi connects naturally with Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale, Lake Mburo, and Entebbe. Kigali is useful when Rwanda is already part of the trip, though the border crossing and vehicle plan need to fit the day.
Drive times can change with weather, road works, traffic, border formalities, and mountain road conditions.
Luggage
Soft bags are strongly recommended for domestic flights and safari vehicles. Domestic flights to Uganda’s safari airstrips usually allow 15 kg per person in soft bags, including hand luggage. Extra luggage can be charged and carriage depends on aircraft space. Safari vehicles also have limited rear storage, especially when six to seven guests are travelling in one vehicle. Hard-shell suitcases can be awkward on small aircraft, mountain roads, and longer park-to-park transfers.
Demestic Flights
Kisoro Airstrip
Kisoro is the practical airstrip for southern Bwindi. It places you close to the access side used for Nkuringo and Rushaga sector planning, instead of bringing you into northern Bwindi and adding extra road time.
Flying to Kisoro removes the full-day road transfer from central Uganda. Scheduled flights operate between Entebbe and Kisoro, with the flight taking about one hour. From Kisoro Airstrip, Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge is reached by pre-arranged 4x4 transfer, usually about 1.5 hours.
Pack light and use soft-sided luggage for this route. The 15 kg allowance usually includes hand luggage, and extra baggage is charged where it can be carried. If you are arriving in Uganda with larger international luggage, an Entebbe night can help you repack before the fly-in safari.
Choose this route when you have fewer safari days, want less time in the vehicle, or are planning a shorter Bwindi safari built around gorilla trekking.
Driving from Entebbe or Kampala
Driving from central Uganda to Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge is a full road day. From Kampala, the route is about 550 km and is commonly planned as an 8–10 hour drive. Most international guests start from Entebbe, often with an overnight before travelling through Kampala and southwest toward Bwindi.
Choose a country road trip when Bwindi is part of a longer Uganda safari and you want the journey to connect naturally with other parks. Many guests travel to or from Nkuringo through Queen Elizabeth National Park, often via Ishasha, especially when the safari links chimpanzee tracking in Kibale with savanna wildlife and gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Lake Mburo can also fit near the beginning or end of the route, adding a lighter wildlife stop while easing the journey toward Entebbe.
The drive moves from central Uganda into the cooler southwest. Expect changing scenery, market towns, farms, rolling hills, and then slower mountain roads as you approach southern Bwindi. A 4x4 vehicle and a driver who knows the route make a real difference.
If you arrive internationally, a night in Entebbe can protect the first day of the safari. Papyrus Guesthouse works well here as a calm arrival or departure base before the longer road journey begins, especially when your flight lands late, you want to repack, or you need to store extra luggage before a fly-in safari.
Driving from Kigali
Kigali can be a practical access point for Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge. The drive is about 170 km and is commonly planned as 5–6 hours, including the border crossing into Uganda.
This route suits guests who are already in Rwanda, have spent time in Kigali or Volcanoes National Park, or find better international flight options through Kigali. It can also suit a shorter Bwindi safari because the road distance from Kigali to Nkuringo is much shorter than the drive from Kampala.
The timing depends on the border crossing, vehicle arrangements, road conditions, and the final mountain approach into Nkuringo. Distance alone does not tell the whole story, so the day should leave room for formalities and slower highland driving.
For Uganda-led safaris, Entebbe is often the stronger starting point. It fits better when the journey includes Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, or a flight connection to Kisoro.
The final road into Nkuringo
The last road into Nkuringo meanders around the Bwindi park boundaries and drives up into the mountains. From Kisoro, the route to the lodge is about 35 km and usually takes 1–1.5 hours by 4x4.
Thirty-five kilometers can still take more than an hour because this is a winding mountain road. Expect murram sections, bends, climbs, village stretches, and slower driving as you rise toward Nteko Ridge. After rain, the road can take longer.
A local driver and a suitable 4x4 make the transfer better paced and more comfortable, especially after a flight into Kisoro or a long road day from another park. The route should not be treated like a city airport transfer. It is mountain access, and it works best when the day leaves room for careful driving.
Where possible, plan to reach the lodge in daylight, especially before a gorilla trekking day. The arrival feels easier when there is time to settle in and confirm the next morning’s plan.
Getting to the trekking center
Bwindi gorilla permits are issued by sector, and Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge gives you access to both Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors.
The Nkuringo briefing point is very close to the lodge, about 10–15 minutes on foot. That helps the trekking morning start calmly, with breakfast at the lodge and a short move to the briefing area before entering the forest.
You can also reach Rushaga from Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge. The drive is about 19 km, so plan for roughly 45 minutes, depending on weather and road conditions.
